Edmonds, Shepard N., composer, author, actor, and music publisher; b. Memphis, Tenn., Sept. 25, 1876. ASCAP 1923. Educ: public school, business college, Central High School, Columbus, Ohio; two years Ohio State Univ., studied law and medi­cine. Began study of music at an early age. Entered theatrical profes­sion 1896, minstrels, musical comedy, and vaudeville. Organized The Buck­eye Glee Club, male chorus, singing through state of Ohio. Entered detec­tive business 1907; operated first Negro Detective Bureau of the world in New York. During this period wrote songs for Broadway stars. In 1908 established first Negro music publishing house in the world. In 1925 retired from detective business. At present, music publisher.
